They're also very useful for preventing major problems if you accidentally wire something backwards (well, assuming you at least wire the diode in the correct direction 😅. But you can check that with a multimeter, that the voltage across the battery stays ~the same before and after the diode in series).
There are lots of great tutorials out there on how to stay safe, I recommend reading/watching one or two at least before doing diy electrical things like this.
