How's the noise cancellation on these things? I have Bose QuietComfort 2. I've never really invested in headphones before, and I like them a lot, even when it's just quiet. But now I'm curious how the ANC is on these things.

These things blow my Bose QC 35 out of the water. The first time I tried these on a plane, I was blown away at how quiet it was. But I have seen reviews that the fit/comfort on these is a miss for some people.

No clue how ANC compares to the Bose ones, but in general the ANC on these are an upgrade AND a downgrade compared to the previous gens. It's an upgrade in the sense more noise is being cancelled so it's technically better in that respect. It's worse in the sense the ANC is too aggressive in my opinion, which means higher discomfort due to pressure on the eardrums. That's a general shortcoming of ANC technology. But in my opinion with AirPods 3 they didn't really improve the technology. They just tuned it to be more aggressive. So you do get better noise cancellation, but it comes at a cost of higher discomfort. How much discomfort each person can tolerate and for how long varies from person to person. It might be perfectly acceptable to you. Unfortunately, for me it was not and that made ANC almost unusable for me. I would rather sacrifice some noise cancelling to reduce pressure. A lot of headphones offer ANC intensity adjustment exactly for this reason. Unfortunately AirPods 3 doesn't offer that, which is a shame. It's full strength all the time, or nothing.

Ahh I had no idea, this explains why I get discomfort and pressure in my ears when I have it on for a long period of time. What causes this exactly? I thought it was just a phantom effect my ears getting used to silence. I live in a very noisy area.

It's because noise cancelling cancels out wavelengths going to the front of the eardrum. But the same wavelengths also travel to the back of the eardrum (albeit at a lower intensity). So now you have a negative differential. That's what causes the discomfort. Like I said, it's inherent to the technology (at least the state it is in today). Perhaps it'll improve someday. But in the meantime, headphones that are going all out and providing as aggressive a cancelling as they can, should provide an adjustment slider to choose how aggressive you want it. Many models to, but AirPods don't, unfortunately.
