Instead of watering the plants or soil directly to risk overwatering or underwatering, you refill the reservoir whenever it is empty. Not ideal for all plants and you still have to add water yourself.

The pot doesn't actually hold much water so you'll have to come back multiple times to get the soil decently hydrated.
You can alternatively top water the soil but if your using something like an aroid mix the water will drain and overflow the small reservoir really quickly.
As for mosquitos, use mosquito bits. Throw some in the reservoir and problem solved.
Edit: with all the downsides I mentioned, these are still great pots especially at this price range. Wanted to give you all a heads up so you know what to expect.
