A raspberry pi and a (much larger) portable touch screen monitor is about $135. Then, just use your calendar via a web interface in a browser. And, as a bonus, no privacy concerns giving a 3rd party access to your contacts and calendar info.

Any additional guidance on this?

Try googling any instances of people trying to self host or home lab an actually comparable setup and you'll quickly do as I did and give up. This is not just a big screen for your calendar, this is for a family. Profiles assigned to specific users, tasks assigned to those users, sharable lists, routines, all kinds of stuff that you would need multiple different apps to accomplish. I understand the data privacy concerns, but if you're using google or Microsoft for your calendar (gmail or outlook) then your concerns are moot. Nobody is gonna waste time attacking a small third party like this, they're gonna hit the big dogs (and often do).

If you actually care about your privacy and use something like Proton or other private calendars, you create a sharable link that sends events you add to your calendar in generic ICS format to the Skylight. No direct access or two way communication which would be the real concern.

After looking into Skylight and Dakboard, we ended up going with Apollosign (you can find them on Amazon).
No subscription fees, full Google Play store, etc. so, as an example of how we have ours set up: we use the built-in Apolosign calendar and daily tasks for the kids and then for larger recurring house tasks, we downloaded the Todoist app and have a widget on the home screen.
