We unlock mobile devices that meet the following eligibility criteria free of charge:
The device must be purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
Three hundred sixty-five (365) days must have passed since the device's activation date.
In summary, same device available via:
Metro for $65 ... auto unlocks in 365 days, continuing the service after 1st month/initial payment not required
Total Wireless for $40 ... will never unlock unless paid for 1 whole year of service (which is not worth - better use case is to use it as wifi only or cheaper service via rebranding to tracfone etc, ymmv)

Is this outlined in their policy somewhere? Before they switched from 60 days to 365, transferring the existing service to a new phone would unlock it just fine.
