Is this outlined in their policy somewhere? Before they switched from 60 days to 365, transferring the existing service to a new phone would unlock it just fine.
It's not stated as such in their policy, but they will say that "transferred service" was paid for another phone, and doesn't count as "paid service" on the new phone. That change took effect last Fall, before the new policy implented on 1/20/26. I had several phones activated in Dec 2025 with transfers, they didn't get unlocked in Feb 2026. I had to add plans of 60 days or more to unlock them, at least TF honored the 60-day term because they were activated prior to 1/20/26.

Yes, it is. This didn't happen exactly when they changed to 365 days. For a long time, the policy stated that they would unlock 60 days after activation. During those times, transferred service was fine. Then they changed it to 60 days of paid active service. That made transferred service not count. Then finally came the change to 365 days of paid active service.
"For all cellphones Activated on or after January 20, 2026, the cellphone will be unlocked upon request after 365 days of paid and active service"

I activated a new TF locked phone on Jan 19, 2026 (just 1 day before they switched to 365 days, way past last Fall) with an existing service and it unlocked in 60 days just fine.

I was not asking about the number of days to unlock, but about the statement that they require activation by a new service to qualify for unlocking. Because as of January 2026 there was no such requirement - I activated a new locked Motorola in Jan 2026 with an existing plan and it unlocked in 60 days without issues.

Yes, not good deal unless you plan to use it on TW or another Verizon Value brand for a year.
So you can use other Verizon providers like visible?

That's odd. Because I had some phones that I activated using transferred service that did not unlock. I called to get them unlocked, and they told me that transferred service didn't count, and I had to add service. Not only that, but after I added that service, they still didn't unlock. I was told that I needed to wait 60 days from the date that the paid service was added. I will say though, that adding the service using rewards points does count as "paid service". At least that has been the case for me so far. I don't really know after the 365 day change, and nobody really knows or will know until next Feb or so. But, you are the 1st person that I've seen claim that the phones unlocked using strictly transferred service after they changed to 60 days of "paid and active service". When they first started that policy, I did have some unlock after 60 days with just 1 month of actual paid service. But after those, no luck.

Good wifi cell for kids. They're definitely locking down the cell phone market with the 1yr unlock requirements.

Did your new TF locked phone come with its own plan? If not, I can't argue with your success, but I know I had to add plans to my TF phones activated in Dec 2025 with transfer because they didn't unlock in Feb 2026, and TF Unlocking Dept told me the phones didn't have any paid service.

A lot of people seem to love this phone, so I would say this is a great deal if you plan on using the service. If not currently the 2026 model is out and comes with free buds, watch, and tag directly from motorola and unlocked for $599 with 256GB of storage. If you have a newer phone you can trade in for even better deal. There is no performance difference between the 2025 and the 2026 version they are pretty much identical minus the look of the case.

Also Motorola in general is having a huge sale on all their phones not just the stylus, including 1TB razors which is really tempting. All unlocked and ready to go on any carrier.

You are speculating or know for a fact?

So basically a trade in phone or wifi only?
Yeah, WiFi only. I see it more as a solid secondary OLED screen for kids, media, or retro emulation.
For $40, it's pretty wild - large 120Hz OLED, big battery, SD card slot, fast charging, and a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 which handles PSP/3DS and below pretty well. I'd factor in another $25-$45 depending on if you want a telescopic controller. Still, for under $100 all-in, it'd be hard to find a nicer screen Android retro gaming setup

Technically the transferred service was "paid and active service" as far as I understand, as I kept using this line with the new phone. I don't know, but maybe $10 data addons I was adding to that line contributed somehow and also at some point after this activation I harvested a 1-year plan from another new phone to this line. Maybe all these things contributed to it. With TF you never know for sure.

As far as I remember it was bundled with a 1-year plan, it was one of those QVC Motorolas, just a different model. The existing line service days got added to the bundled plan during activation.

I don't care about service. Is this the current best deal on a phone? Anything else like this? Something with more storage or even a Samsung? Also I'm assuming the "Sign up and save 15% on your first phone" doesn't work here?
The coupon might give you 15% off the price of the phone - $0. As far as deals on phones, you can get the Edge 2025 (256GB) for free from Metro on $65 plan. Or you could get the S25 FE (128GB) for $99 on the same plan. But the S25 FE requires a port in.

Yes, that bundled plan counts as paid service. So that explains it.
