with Apple Silicon, its best to buy the most budget or the latest offering, and this is a solid value if you want to trim your budget down for a solid everyday laptop, 16GB of ram is great. Depending on condition and silver doesn't show many scratches, Not sure if the M5 @ ~ $900 is worth it.
M1 still works really well for most things someone would do with an Air. Just be mindful that it may not receive the latest MacOS version soon. Apple tends to have a 7 year cut off(this is a 2020 laptop). You will still receive security updates though.
I am daily driving a Macbook M1 8gb. It's still light years faster than any Intel. I wouldn't dare photo or video edit on this machine but for coffee shop and office work its perfect as a throwaway laptop.
If its not in the shape you want send it back. Ebay money back guarantee, highly rated seller w/ free returns. I would consider this deal if I was in need of another spare macbook.

"It's still light years faster than any Intel. I wouldn't dare photo or video edit on this machine"
So you're saying you can't do photo or video editing on any Windows PC? No Intel can handle photo or video editing?
"its perfect as a throwaway laptop."
Still pretty expensive for a throwaway laptop. But don't be too rough with it or it might crack or you might start getting weird lines on your screen.
This is a beat-up used laptop that's over 5 years old. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
These are "refurb", which is a lie. They're used, no different than a garage sale find. Nothing specific has been done to "refurbish" them, ergo, they're wiped down and given a power test. We call this in the industry a "spit n' shine treatment", usually with more spit than shine! 🤣
The 8gb/128gb model should be highly suspect -- it was only sold to the EDU market. So imagine some child beating the utter tar out it for five years, and now you're getting the scraps.
The 16gb/256gb is....baseline adequate for entry-level. It'll outperform that newfangled "NEO" laptop, but just barely. As others have said here, the likelihood of future updates is questionable at best.
The real competitor here is a NEW (or Apple refurbs, which are actually refurbished!) M4 or M5 entry level Air for sub-$800. Yes, that's twice the price....which is to be expected for a literally new machine made within the last year or two, with a first-party warranty (instead of the "all states" warranty with who-know-what conditions and clauses). Less risk, newer, considerably faster, and many more years of updates.
With that all said, not the best deal at $300-400.
