I came here just to see by how much the mileage claim has gone up over the years. I was not disappointed. FOURTY miles now, damn. I'll leave the usual disclaimer, don't expect more than half a mile in a city or buildings, and maybe 1.5 miles with no obstructions. 40 miles will never ever happen with these 2 watt, 3AAA and stubby antenna radios.

They don't need WiFi, so kind of, yes. But since the ship is made from thick metal everywhere, you probably won't get far. From the top of the deck to the other side of the top deck, yes, and maybe even from a balcony. But if you're thinking of using them from a room inside the ship to the top deck let's say, I don't think it will work. But I'm not sure, never tried that.

The IPX67 rating is about all these have going for them over other FRS radios that can be had for MUCH less.
