The XHDATA D808 Portable Radio is a receive-only radio. You can only listen in, not transmit or talk back.

I so don't need this, but it's tempting as a hobby radio. This is the kind of radio you can use to talk with other hobbyists (or listen in) across the country, or just stalk the airwaves for number stations (secret codes).

Tempting with the 18650 batteries, but AA ones are so much cheaper.

It's true that AA's would be nice but an 18650 will last just as long and is easily rechargeable. I don't think it's an issue really. You won't have to replace it for many years and then it only costs maybe $12 for a new high quality replacement.

I know what you mean. My uncle gave me an old surplus unit receiver that had tubes and mechanical gears that moved slugs in and out of coil charged inductors. The thing shocked me a few times because I had jammed foil around a fuse to make it fit. (Look up the R-390A Receiver)

So, yeah, this would have been killer, but it could not duplicate the smell of an old warm receiver.

I wouldn't get a new radio without HD Radio [wikipedia.org] support, which this doesn't seem to have.

I am in agreement with the batteries, I just meant AA powered radios are much cheaper. I have quite the supply of salvaged 18650s so they are almost free to me at this point. At $50 this is tempting, $40 would be considered, and sub $30 would be instant buy.

This radio isn't about what HD radio does. HD Radio is high quality FM or AM which is sort of wasted on a small single speaker radio anyway. This radio is more about pulling in a collection of different radio spectrum signals and I bet the speaker is mostly geared for voice only. If you want a good sounding compact HD Radio, get something like the Sangean HDR-19 that will make you really enjoy HD Radio.

Millennials and older generation will appreciated this SW hobby. It quickly reminded hearing radio stations from Cuba back in the day.

You can save more money and get the spectacular Sangean HDR-18, too.

You're not wrong. There are hundreds of knock-off radios from Asia, but this one has SSB which is rather unusual at this price.
