With an instruction like this, I doubt people were following it to wash wool.

Great price but lots of reviews say it developed holes after the first wash.

Stuff like Smartwool usually has something like Nylon in it to increase durability. I would never put 100% merino wool in the washing machine - always hand wash with a detergent made for wool but also merino doesn't need to be washed frequently like cotton.

I bought 5x last time they were 29.99, buying 5x again, only one has a hole and I think I developed that while hiking through some thick brush - otherwise these are terrific, I usually wear another t-shirt over top of them if i'm in thick brush, they make a most excellent wicking layer and offer pretty solid sun protection.

I do wash wool base layers in the washing machine, but in a garment bag, on cold or gentle cycle, always hang dry. I have some old REI wool stuff and it washes well, still in good shape.
