In my case: Grain free cat food because the floof is allergic is circa $25 a 5 lb bag if I get it from petsmart. It's $21 for a 20 lb bag at costco. So one bag purchased saves me about $80.
Yeah, you have to pay there. But going there just once pretty much pays for itself. That's why people go there. The membership pays for the quality, and then the cost control.
Over 50% of costco's profits are those $60 memberships, and overall it earns Costco about 70% of their operating income.
That's insane. They have an average Gross Margin "mark-up" on items of 10-12%, maxing out at 15%. For perspective, WALMART does an average of 25%. Even Aldi is around 20% average gross profit margins.
Outside of enlisting in the military, and getting the US Commisary for 3% gross margin markups - Costco is the cheapest you can get. And $60/Year is much cheaper for most people than a 4+ year contract.
