On many brother printers to disable firmware updates navigate to the printer's settings menu, then to Machine Info, and finally to Firmware Auto Check, where you can select "Off" to disable automatic updates. This prevents the printer from automatically searching for and installing new firmware versions that may block 3rd party toners.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
Access the printer's menu: Press the "Tools" icon on the printer's control panel.
Navigate to Machine Info: Select "All Settings" and then "Machine Info".
Disable Firmware Auto Check: Select "Firmware Auto Check" and then choose "Off" to disable automatic updates.

Unless you duplex scan everyday, it's not a deal breaker. Most home office type do not have duplex scanner. It will add bulk to your printer too.
I didn't need a new printer (I have a Ricoh C250DN that has been trucking along fine) but have been looking for an all-in-one solution for home and to upgrade. A CB site sent me 20% e-mail bonus after I was browsing earlier so at this point deal is too good to pass up.
What is duplex scanning?
This lloks like a good deal for color laser. I have a Brother B/W all in one refurb unit that works great. Honestly I've never even used the scanner
Edit: it does have linux printer and scanner drivers.
Never taking another Brother update. I was able to find another brand later that worked after the update, so I assume they're just blocking RFID's as the aftermarket figures out how to work around Brother's previous blocks.
Hoping I can move the tag from the current toner when it's empty to the ones they blocked.
