This WOLFBOX 50 amp J1772 charger stands out as a basic but capable Level 2 home EVSE with a 25 foot cable, smart scheduling, and a plug or hardwired setup. The housing is bulky and visually awkward for indoor mounting, but the app is described as bare bones rather than complicated. Certification is the main concern, since it is CSA certified rather than UL certified, though the CSA label is also described as testing to UL standards. The 14 50 plug setup may need derating to 40 amps continuous, so hardwiring looks cleaner for full output.

I don't think it's so much that it needs to be EV rated but I'm pretty sure that NEMA 14-50 when hardwired can't exceed 40A continuous. I've never installed (and I've done a few) an EV charger that's got a plug that will go above it.
There are outlets that have lower resistance at the terminals. They tend to be more expensive, also. Take a look at the industrial grade outlet from Hubbel, Bryant, or Cooper.

I have the 50A one and it's great. I love that it clicks in the housing instead of just hanging. I prefer emporia, but this one is also great.

It's not the receptacle, it's the plug that isn't rated to 50A continuous. NEMA 14-50p is the plug rating, 50A max, 80% of that continuous (40A). That's why chargers that have options to hardwire or use a plug generally tell you to configure for 50A continuous only in hardwired configuration.

Hubbell Industrial/Commercial Grade are designed for a continuous 50 A load. The manufacturers that I named all make both the outlet and the plug. But you still have NEC requirements at 80%.

If you are concerned about the quality of the outlet or plug buy commercial/industrial grade.

If you are concerned about an electrical inspection or a perhaps fire burning your house down, buy up to 100 ft of 4/4 AWG (4 AWG, 4 conductor) copper cable and wire straight from the device (no pigtail) to the panel's 70A-2P breaker.

It's your house and your decision. Good luck.

No you're right. I know extensions are deemed unsafe by most, but out of desperation I've been using one daily for 5 years with no issue whatsoever.
Yeah unfortunately I'm going to have to go with an extension. My electrician said to get a standard 14-50 extension and plug my charger into it rather than a specific ev charger that goes into my charger though
