That's not to say that a 120/240 split phase wouldn't be more useful for many backup panel applications, but if I still lived out in the boonies, this would be a pretty economical choice to make sure I kept my water supply in good stead even when the power went down. Of course, with a big enough array it could have an actual ROI with inexpensive panels.
It's not that much more expensive to get a split phase unit. You'll spend more trying to work around the 230v limitation than just buying the proper inverter.
