The ROG Ally is a Windows handheld PC that stands out for access to Xbox, Steam, Epic, and GOG, plus remote play and Play Anywhere support for some Xbox titles. The screen, sound, and ergonomics get strong praise, and it can even run Bazzite or SteamOS. The Z2A chip is framed as entry level, better suited to retro emulation, indie games, older AAA titles, and streaming than demanding recent releases. Setup takes more work than expected, and the 1080p display can look soft at lower resolutions, so expectations matter.
Handheld PC players who want Windows game access, because it runs PC Game Pass, Steam, Epic, and GOG titles.
It is a handheld PC with the Xbox app, not a native Xbox. Xbox games can be played through remote play, while Play Anywhere titles can be downloaded and played normally on the device.
This is one of the few new entry-level PC handhelds available, but the Steam Deck OLED is still the stronger gaming option if you can wait. The Ally offers Windows, higher resolution, VRR, and access to Xbox/Game Pass, while the Deck's 800p OLED is sharper at lower resolutions and generally better matched to its chipset.
Yes. It can run Steam, Epic, and GOG, and it can also install Bazzite or SteamOS. That makes it a flexible handheld PC rather than a locked-down Xbox-only device.
The Z2A is capable, but it is not a strong choice for recent AAA games at high settings or high frame rates. It is better suited to retro emulation, indie games, and older AAA titles like PS3/360-era games, with newer AAA often landing around 30 fps or less.
Yes, remote play can work while traveling or off your home network. One setup detail that mattered was having NAT set to open, after which remote play worked well.
"The AMD Ryzen Z2A is a budget-tier processor aimed at lower-cost handhelds. It is significantly slower than the older Ryzen Z1 Extreme. Unless you are looking for the absolute cheapest entry-level handheld, the Z1 Extreme delivers vastly superior CPU, multi-threading, and gaming performance."

Why don't just buy a steam deck instead? 🤔
Sadly, they're completely sold out direct from Valve, so the secondary market is the only way someone can buy one at the moment. This handheld may be mediocre, but it's now one of the few entry level PC handhelds available new.
Let's all hope DRAM and NAND demand is met before next year and new production coming online helps, because this increasing lack of competition is making mediocre products enticing to those who can't wait.
It's available, Steam Deck isn't. It plays Windows and PC GamePass games. You prefer higher resolution and VRR screen vs lower resolution, no VRR, and OLED.

Thats not exactly a real life comparison. The Steam Deck is 800p OLED and its chipset is suitable for that. To match that on the Xbox Ally you need to run games at 720p. When you run games at 720p on a 1080p screen, the image looks soft, almost blurry. Side-by-side the 800p OLED image looks sharper with better colors and blacks. Otherwise you can run some games at 1080p on the Ally and they look sharp, but you will take a hit in framerate.
Personally, I would only suggest this model Xbox Ally if someone doesn't have a handheld and doesn't want to hold out for the Deck to come back in stock and deal with the headache of it selling out immediately again and being stuck with nothing. There's nothing wrong with the Ally as long as you have the right expectations around how games will run.
I bought it. It gets here today. I didn't "need" it. I am cautiously optimistic. I am looking forward to playing with the tech. The price is higher than I would like but it's way cheaper than the Legion Go S or SteamDeck. I see a lot of hate for this thing but the chipset is similar to the heavily praised SteamDeck (that is unavailable for the foreseeable future). The XBox Ally supposedly has better ergonomics and access to some of my XBox stuff as well as Epic, GoG and Steam. I can even install Bazzite or SteamOS on this. I wish it had the ability to play all my XBox library but thats another issue.

I have a Legion Go S with the Z2 A (Bought it back when prices were reasonable). That SoC is extremely capable, don't expect to play any AAA games from the past 4 years on it at more than like 30 fps, and you'll be fine. The Z2 A is amazing for retro emulation, indie games, and AAA games from like PS3/360 era. Even Doom 2016 runs really well.
I finally caved and grabbed one when I saw how low the game streaming latency is compared to a phone or ipad with a usb c controller.
does this play xbox games via the cloud or directly on the hardware? I have a One X and a fair number of games on my xbox account yet to play, but this is my first diving into the handheld hardware scene. I'm also thinking a Switch2 instead, since I can play the xbox games on my One X, albeit not as a handheld.
thanks!

You can only do that through remote play and play the games that are on your XBox. Some games (mostly the newer ones) are Play Anywhere compatible so you can download them onto the Ally and play as normal. It's basically a handheld PC with an XBox app not an actual XBox. I just got it yesterday and updated everything. It's good. I like it. Right now, there are free games through the Epic Games storefront (thread on the front page of this site) and cheap ones through Steam as well. It's a decent trade-off.

Does this mean a solid internet connection is needed at both devices?
thanks for the help!

The device can run Windows PC Game Pass titles and other PC storefront games.
Remote play can work well after NAT is set to open, enabling Xbox library streaming.
The handheld can feel comfortable to hold for longer sessions and includes a decent screen and sound.
It can be used as a handheld PC by installing Bazzite or SteamOS.
The Z2A-class processor is significantly slower than Ryzen Z1 Extreme for CPU and multi-threaded gaming.
Matching Steam Deck's 800p OLED experience may require running games around 720p on a 1080p display.
AAA games from roughly the past four years may struggle to exceed about 30 fps on Z2A-class hardware.
The deal may not hold up over time because Steam pricing can rise relative to the listed amount.
