Sadly, they're completely sold out direct from Valve, so the secondary market is the only way someone can buy one at the moment. This handheld may be mediocre, but it's now one of the few entry level PC handhelds available new.

Let's all hope DRAM and NAND demand is met before next year and new production coming online helps, because this increasing lack of competition is making mediocre products enticing to those who can't wait.

this is basically just an ROG ALLY with a STEAMDECK chipset.... the worst combination
just buy a used STEAMDECK OLED or Gen 1 ALLY Z1E

Thats not exactly a real life comparison. The Steam Deck is 800p OLED and its chipset is suitable for that. To match that on the Xbox Ally you need to run games at 720p. When you run games at 720p on a 1080p screen, the image looks soft, almost blurry. Side-by-side the 800p OLED image looks sharper with better colors and blacks. Otherwise you can run some games at 1080p on the Ally and they look sharp, but you will take a hit in framerate.

Personally, I would only suggest this model Xbox Ally if someone doesn't have a handheld and doesn't want to hold out for the Deck to come back in stock and deal with the headache of it selling out immediately again and being stuck with nothing. There's nothing wrong with the Ally as long as you have the right expectations around how games will run.

I bought it. It gets here today. I didn't "need" it. I am cautiously optimistic. I am looking forward to playing with the tech. The price is higher than I would like but it's way cheaper than the Legion Go S or SteamDeck. I see a lot of hate for this thing but the chipset is similar to the heavily praised SteamDeck (that is unavailable for the foreseeable future). The XBox Ally supposedly has better ergonomics and access to some of my XBox stuff as well as Epic, GoG and Steam. I can even install Bazzite or SteamOS on this. I wish it had the ability to play all my XBox library but thats another issue.

I have a Legion Go S with the Z2 A (Bought it back when prices were reasonable). That SoC is extremely capable, don't expect to play any AAA games from the past 4 years on it at more than like 30 fps, and you'll be fine. The Z2 A is amazing for retro emulation, indie games, and AAA games from like PS3/360 era. Even Doom 2016 runs really well.

I finally caved and grabbed one when I saw how low the game streaming latency is compared to a phone or ipad with a usb c controller.

does this play xbox games via the cloud or directly on the hardware? I have a One X and a fair number of games on my xbox account yet to play, but this is my first diving into the handheld hardware scene. I'm also thinking a Switch2 instead, since I can play the xbox games on my One X, albeit not as a handheld.

You can only do that through remote play and play the games that are on your XBox. Some games (mostly the newer ones) are Play Anywhere compatible so you can download them onto the Ally and play as normal. It's basically a handheld PC with an XBox app not an actual XBox. I just got it yesterday and updated everything. It's good. I like it. Right now, there are free games through the Epic Games storefront (thread on the front page of this site) and cheap ones through Steam as well. It's a decent trade-off.
