The reviews are a bit mixed and evidently there is no HDMI input for TV/ARC. Like most soundbars, you can't control volume from the TV with an digital optical cable. This is the problem my dad has now with his older TV with no ARC. I think some reviewers have figured out work-arounds to the volume issue.

You can pair the tv remote to work the volume on the soundbar when you turn off the tvs built in speakers. Tell your dad I said "yw"
