PowerBlock EXP adjustable dumbbells are praised as a compact, durable alternative to twist dial sets, with a more natural curl position, quick weight changes, and easy expansion as strength increases. The stand gets strong support for keeping the weights off the floor, reducing bending, and making the setup feel more convenient over time. Main tradeoffs are the bulky cage, thicker rubber grips, and occasional awkwardness for curls or small hands. Compatibility for bars and some expansion kits is limited, so future add ons need checking.

Common Questions (5)

  • The stand mainly adds convenience by giving you a flat place to change weights and keeping the dumbbells off the floor. It also reduces bending and back strain with heavier sets, and several owners say it makes the setup much easier to live with long term.

  • Yes, the EXP can be expanded with later stages, and several comments warn that expansions may be harder to find if the line is discontinued. Buying the stages you expect to need up front avoids paying more or hunting for stock later.

  • The rectangular PowerBlock shape lets you hold the weights closer to your body for a more natural curl than twist-dial designs. It also lets you add expansion stages later instead of being stuck at the lower weight range of many dial systems.

  • The listed EXP set does not work with the barbell, kettlebell, or EZ-bar attachments, and PowerBlock does not make a clamp-on bar for this model. The compatible bar accessory appears to exist for the 90 EXP instead, not this deal's EXP version.

  • The Pro 50 uses knurled stainless grips and urethane-coated weights, which are quieter but bulkier. The EXP uses a rubber grip and uncoated metal weights, and the EXP can reportedly be upgraded with knurled grips later.

Do these work with the kettlebell handle?

I think the answer to that question is: No.

99% sure, but others can chime in.

I went with the Eisenlink dumbells and although those are built like a tank and I do like them Storing the extra plates is kind of a chore and I kind of wish I went with the Powerblocks. I didn't because I didn't think I would like the side bars hitting my wrist and I still probably wouldn't like that part I may have preferred to deal with that than the loose plates and the slower weight changes of the Eisenlinks.
I had that choice when I bought these a few months ago. These ones are pretty large so I'm able to wear my watch in them fine. There isn't any rub on the wrist. The trade off against the elites is that these are a bit bulkier and possibly noisier (clank clank). Not a big deal if listening to music or using fewer extension plates ig

I use this fitrx stand from wallyworld. Have the extensions and it holds the 90lb dumbbells with no issues. https://www.walmart.com/ip/365079...ca3374d032

can't you get the twist dial weights closer to the body because it's only the handle in the way? for these types it's a giant rectangle box around your fist
Yeah I used these, and while my hand is small, I found it annoying to pick up and hold

Could anyone explain why stands are worth it? Mostly convenient than picking up from the ground or any other use case I might be missing?
I built my own stand out of 2x4. A little more to my liking with a shelf on the bottom. Stand for these always seemed a bit mediocre for the price, but to each their own. I'll upload a picture later, I'm at the gym, lol.

55 yo here. I am fit enough. You all needing more than 55 lbs each ( level 1) are nutz. You need a real gym at that point. Or at least a squat rack or a universal. Either you are super fit and into weightlifting and really need a form factor thats going to work in a small space, thats great but not as common as inflated ego types that are overambitious and are going to hurt themselves with bad form and no spotters. Don't like what im saying? 1) You're aging. 2) I work in rehab and see patients. 3)Have fun with your tendonitis. Or worse.
I'm 47 and lifting since 17. I got the 90 set a few years ago, upgraded from my sport 40s because Dad-life keeps me from the gym and I don't want or have space for bars etc.
I understand your logic but most overambitious / ego people will avoid the difficulty of dumbbells because they feel unstable and it's harder. That doesn't feed the ego as well. I'm guessing you see the outliers in your profession.
FYI, I got my bicep tendonitis the old fashion way in the gym vs with my heavy dubells 🤣. Body weight dips for the win/fail. Getting older and not realizing its impacts in conjunction with less time to train regularly was my blind spot. Brain remembers how to go like your 20 but your not. 1.5 years later I'm back to heavy lifting. I think I owe some of my new stability and rehab with mostly dumbbells because it forces more stabilization, that and the age learning curve. Slower, more stretching, more controlled.

I would say easier to hold and pick up, but the handle you grab on to felt small, love not surehow someone with a bigger hand uses them.

It's best to test both before buying. I would say the power block wold have less failure points than a dial style.

Yeah, can't test either. Trying to decide from afar on durability and comfortability

I see, so the bow flex dial handle felt narrow, as in I could fit my hand, no idea how some with a wider hand could hold it comfortably.

This power block it feels awkward holding onto it and the gap between the weights and the handle felt narrow. But th handle is wide enough for big hands

Powerblock is easier to expand if you go over the base 50 pounds, with dials, you need to buy a completely different set.

If you drop the dial, it would likely damage the mechanism. Powerblock is more durable.

Powerblock not good for curls.
Maybe youtube could have a video comparing them

I have these and the add-on up to 90lbs. They work great and do everything you need. Some of the others are a little more convenient but also less durable. I also bought 4x 2.5 magnetic weight plates to quickly add 2.5 or 5lbs. Yes I acknowledge this is for lazy people who don't want to take all of the weight off to empty the outer weights and put them back on but when I'm in the middle of something I want ease of use and I bought them used.
As far as the stand goes, I did tons of research and ended up with the eisenlink adjustable dumbbell stand, the low one. You can step in between the weight and stand up and walk away, making it easier for heavyweight. This stand is awesome and looks cool at the same time although it does not have a built-in storage for the adder weights. Etsy has weight holders that are 3D printed you could add on to it or even enlarge the 1" frame holes with a hole saw or Dremel. Ultimately I chose this setup for durability and longevity and to last me forever.
