"Like other GL.iNet routers, the Flint 3 runs a version of OpenWRT, a highly configurable open-source firmware that's based on Linux. It supports features, including dual-WAN with failover, cellular tethering, VPN connectivity with Tailscale, ZeroTier, OpenVPN, and WireGuard pre-installed so you can route your entire network through a VPN."

Doesn't support vanilla openwrt, only custom made by GL.inet. it's also slower than Flint 2. I would wait for Flint 4.

GL.iNet is directly impacted by the Trump administration's blanket ban on foreign-made consumer routers, which was enacted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on March 23, 2026. The FCC restrictions only apply to newly designed router models trying to enter the U.S. market. This model, the GL.iNet GL-BE9300 will be supported through 2029, and the company is planning to build manufacturing in the U.S. However, if GL.iNet fails to secure a domestic manufacturing partner or a Department of Homeland Security exemption by 2029, they will legally be barred from pushing further official firmware modifications (Class I permissive changes) to U.S. units.

TLDR: The router's good for three years then it becomes a big question mark.

This right here. Flint 2 and upcoming 4 have MediaTek processors. Flint 3 has Qualcomm. Given that Flint 2 sales are pretty much nonexistent anymore, it kinda feels like they're trying to dump Flint 3s before the 4 comes out.

I just got Flint 2 direct, was $144+tx. Vanilla Openwrt is cranking, SQM, Adblock, AI doing detailed tcpdump.. works well for my 1gb cable

What's going to to stop them? Isn't their own openwrt still open source?

Its probably that most users of GL.iNet use GL's proprietary tweaked firmware.

How's the coverage on this? There are similar Asus routers that advertise larger sq ft coverage but idk if it's accurate or not?

I didn't like it. Most of the luci wifi commands don't work or mess things up

How is usteer? I find it to be most useful feature in openwrt.

I wouldn't bank on the Flint 4 coming out any time soon given the government's recent ban on foreign routers. The GL.iNet Slate 7 Pro came out recently and it's illegal to import into the US. In order to get approval for a new router, GL.iNet would have to essentially take concrete steps to onshore all manufacturing and component sourcing to the United States. It's effectively impossible for a company of GL.iNet's size.

Thank God our government is protecting us from malware by... banning legitimate companies like GL.iNet from patching security vulnerabilities on existing routers. It's pure genius.

My theory is that the C-Suite executives at Netgear realized nobody will buy into their upcoming router-as-a-service business model unless the government literally bans all of the competition.

I have this router and it is fantastic. The speed is great, and the control I have from the app (or PC) is so much better than any other router I've used.

Good coverage, though not noticeably better than my previous Netgear. Just a better signal and speed within the circle
