I got the 8gb on the last S&D deal a few weeks/months ago. No discernible damage on front or back and it seemingly has no ads (if they are always on the lock screen, I haven't seen any ads yet). Probably YMMV. Though I've seen on other threads tricks for getting ads removed.

If you're Jailbreaking and this does not seem like a good deal to you or it's sold out. I recently purchased a Paperwhite 2 on ebay for $25 shipped. It's a smaller device with a 6" Screen. It was easy to jailbreak just had to update to the correct firmware. It was a device that could not be registered, and it's been sunset by Amazon. Been exclusively using this device with KoReader because of it's size. The only downside is that it does not have a Warm Light, but you get over it fast especially for that price. The interface is a little slow compared to brand new kindles, but only because new kindles are almost as responsive as phones. I tried them in store. However this does not make the interface unusable. There's just a micro second delay that you really only notice if you compare it to a newer kindle. I also have a Kobo Libra and I wanted a smaller device and a device I could loose and not be upset about loosing. I liked the size of the Kindle Basic, and these older Paperwhites check most of the boxes, and just like the Kindle Basic there's no warm light. Just my 2 cents because I've been tempted by this deal before and always regret not getting it but the Larger screen of the Paperwhite seems redundant to me since I have a Kobo and I mostly use KoReader.

I believe so but the previously posted deal was for the green backed version. Right now only the black backed version is available (which I imagine is more popular).
