This is solid. Had one and then upgraded to a more powerful unit. This still serves as my heat set insert tool. Steal for $5.

I never had good luck with cheap soldering irons. They don't seem to get hot like they should. If you plan to doing a lot of soldering, invest in a decent soldering station with a temp control you will be glad you did.

Make sure you're seasoning brand new tips. Makes a big difference in how the tip behaves through the rest of its life.

I have a cheap Weller that has mostly done what I need over the years. I was planning to upgrade to a pinecil at the next deal, but with temp control here I wonder if this would be a suitable upgrade. I just don't want to buy more junk that I will have to deal with getting rid of later.

It works for small wire like 14AWG and thinner. I bought like two $10-15 soldering iron kits off Amazon 60w and 80w. They had trouble heating up 12AWG and thicker wire.

Was it a high wattage temperature controlled like this?
I got another really cheap temp control iron, and it works great and is nice and portable unlike my Hakko station, which is also great, but not small. Also, my the cheap iron has small tips, which is great for tiny SMT soldering.
