As a starter set, this isn't bad, but I'd lean toward Victorinox at probably half the price for similar knives. Still, these are high quality, and the price is a big cut from the actual retail prices at the Wusthof website. I don't like the full bolsters on these, but that's just preference. And breadknives are pretty much disposable, because to most people they're not worth the effort or investment to sharpen like the chef's or paring knives, so if I wanted Wusthofs, I'd probably get the 2-piece set and buy a cheap-ish breadknife separately, maybe something like a Mercer.

This is a badass, lifetime knife set.

Great balance, easy to sharpen, stainless (important if a guest accidentally runs them through the dishwasher).

Seniors will find the bread knife by far the safest way to cut a watermelon

Highly unlikely similar quality Victorinox is at half the price. You get what you pay for and Victorinox is not comparable at half the price. These are lifetime purchases so if you're ready for these get them at these decent prices.

The Victorinox Fibrox knives are not too bad, maybe the perfect budget or beginner knife.

People don't like them because they have that Fibrox molded plastic handle that looks cheap and can't be replaced if damaged.

To be fair, Victorinox does make a line of actual forged knives, with full bolsters and replaceable handles, but you rarely see them in the states. I've sharpened a few, and they are really nice.

I agree. I was referencing the "Starter Knife Set" part of the title, and meant to suggest that if you wanted an actual starter set, that's what I'd go with. That way, if there was something you didn't like - the bolster, weight, or handle feel, for example - it wouldn't hurt as much to switch it up. I stand by the bread knife opinion, though. I don't think a bread knife is worth investing serious money in, so I still think the 2-piece (no bread knife) Wusthof set is the better buy.

If you don't have a ceramic honing rod to touch up your serrated bread knife, you can take it to any local knife sharpening joint (google "knife sharpening near me").

$12 will get it sharper than it was at the factory

Even if you sharpen your own knives, an occasional pro sharpener visit can re-center your bevels, get rid of the 'belly' that happened when you used a pull-thru sharpener, or fix a chipped/broken point. Most joints charge $10 a knife with standard edges.
