Cheap parts, easy to work on, and they're built very solid compared to the toy grade rc stuff. You probably won't have much to do if you're driving it reasonably. 2WD can shred tires quickly on pavement if you're having a blast ripping and sliding. I don't consider that a downside though just a consumable and they'll last longer if you aren't constantly drifting.

Your 6yr old will crash it, but they're going to have a blast tearing around too. The throttle limit and DSC (dynamic stability control) will help them learn. The arrma trucks are very tough and can take a beating. Depending on where you're driving it might be worth the extra $50 to get the Senton 223s which has 4WD and will probably be a little easier to control on varied terrain. Can't go wrong with either though or get both if you can so that you two can race and chase each other. That's a lot of fun.

Both trucks also let you run either a 2s battery for around 35mph top speed or a 3s battery for around 50mph top speed. So you can stick a 2s battery in the truck and then throttle limit it to 50% to keep things really manageable. Then pop a 3s at 100% for you to go for a 50mph rip.

Never have had a hobby grade RC. 2 questions.

Is this thing gonna be a pain to maintain?

Will my 6 year old crash it?

ended up going with the 223s (probably overkill for having my dog chase it) but what battery would you recommend for it? I have 0 RC experience since a short stint in the hobby back in middle school lol

If you used to be into it you're going to love the truck. The technology has come a long way and these things really rip now. I recommend just sticking with the recommended spektrum smart batteries and chargers to keep things simple. If you sign up for the free Horizon Hobby rewards program you get 20% off spektrum chargers and batteries and 3% rewards on your purchase. Read up on lipo battery safe usage and storage if you're not used to them.

So you may be joking but I honestly know someone who bought the blx Typhon for exactly that. My friend's dad got a new puppy after his dog died of old age and quickly realized he no longer had the stamina for a puppy at his age. He slapped a GoPro mount and a duck trainer on it and a few 35 mph rips for 15-30 minutes a day got him through the high energy/destruction phase.

haha i'm totally not joking! I walk my pup 3+ hours a day and she whines. I need to have her run nonstop or i pay the price. I mostly started looking at cheaper RC cars but wanted something better for me to mess around with as well! Ended up getting the 4X4. I havent touched RC cars in so long I'm worried I won't know how to maintain the thing. Looking into a mesh cover now haha

If you're talking a mesh cover for dust and debris you probably don't need it for the newer arrma cars. For example the Senton 223s tub integrates very nicely with the body and keeps at least 95% of the junk out while adding extra strength as well. It's a cool setup.

Go through the paperwork it comes with to find a detailed parts breakdown. You can also find interactive breakdowns on their website where you can just click to order the parts you need if something breaks.

He'll absolutely crash and flip it plenty of times—that's part of the fun. You'll want something durable that can take the abuse. The good news is replacement parts are generally inexpensive and most repairs are easy to do yourself. We have an Arrma Big Rock and love it. It's been a great truck for both my 6-year-old and me. We started with the power turned down and increased it as he got more comfortable. That's one reason I'd recommend a 4WD 3S model—it'll last longer, gives you room to grow, and is a blast for both kids and adults. Most radios let you limit the power to 50%, 75%, or 100%, so you can keep things manageable while they're learning.

Hey! Are there Traxxas battery to spektrum chargers? I have both batteries and chargers. The spektrum one seems sooo much more advanced. It might just be the screen though.
