Is this thing gonna be a pain to maintain?
Will my 6 year old crash it?

Your 6yr old will crash it, but they're going to have a blast tearing around too. The throttle limit and DSC (dynamic stability control) will help them learn. The arrma trucks are very tough and can take a beating. Depending on where you're driving it might be worth the extra $50 to get the Senton 223s which has 4WD and will probably be a little easier to control on varied terrain. Can't go wrong with either though or get both if you can so that you two can race and chase each other. That's a lot of fun.
Both trucks also let you run either a 2s battery for around 35mph top speed or a 3s battery for around 50mph top speed. So you can stick a 2s battery in the truck and then throttle limit it to 50% to keep things really manageable. Then pop a 3s at 100% for you to go for a 50mph rip.
