SIlly newb questions, are these ready to go out of the box? I'm guessing ROMS must be sought elsewhere?

I can't say specifically for this one, but I know a lot of these do come preloaded with at least some stuff if it has an ad card. And as a noob, if you're on thenfence, this is a good price for a good unit. I went down a deep rabbit hole when I was debating buying an R36S and the BatleXP was the one to get.

Only maybe 50% of n64 games are playable with RK3326 handhelds like these. They'll "play," but suffer from low framerates that ruin the experience. GoldenEye for instance runs pretty badly no matter what you do on these, while Mario Kart 64 is actually quite playable. Anbernic usually ships playable games on their preloaded cards.

Handhelds that generally play 100% of N64 games are closer to $100. You'll need something with Unisoc T618, Snapdragon 662, or similar.
Here's a list of T618 handhelds. I'd recommend one with a 4:3 screen and at least one thumbstick for N64. If you want to branch out into PSP, a 16:9 screen works well, but you'll have black bars on either side for N64.

Get the G350. It's superior in just about every way and is widely considered the best R36S style handheld.
  • Better face buttons, sticks and bumper buttons
  • Better plastics
  • Better SD Card - This one is huge, because you can get by just fine with the 64GB Kioxia that Anbernic ships in these, while you'll want to replace the one in the R36S.
  • The one drawback is the slightly smaller battery, 3200mAh vs 3500mAh in the R36S. I don't think this makes that big a deal however, as these devices don't lend well to long gaming sessions, and you'll get 4-6 hours when playing PS1 games, the most demanding emulation these can reliably handle.
Just load the G350 with DarkOS and you'll have a nice little handheld. You can use the old MicroSD as a backup, and copy firmware / games as you'd like from the old card.
