I love the U version. I have those. But I do not have the heater version.

Agreed. I'd be installing and removing this unit twice a year. But with U-shaped or saddle config, install it and leave it, and have AC in summer, heat in winter and fresh air in spring and autumn.

I have a free standing/portable Midea unit I got used for a steal with the heat pump feature. I live in southern MA and have been using it to help warm up the house in the cooler mornings (low 40s all week May 10-17). Its worked great! And my smart plug tells me it was less than 48 kWh of electricity for that week - one day it got down to 38 degrees. And now I can flip a button and use it for AC. I wasn't a believer but now I am - these units are great for the shoulder seasons.

Old technology implies the cutting edge dedicated and permanently installed heat pumps are found in window units shared with ac functions. These do not exist, at least not in the USA and widely, if at all.

I had this for 1 summer but it fell and broke just before the autumn so can't comment on its heat performance. My intention was to use local heating during off seasons.. I wouldn't want any window heater peak winter in northeast!

However, as an AC, my experience was below average. It replaced a 8k U and was louder and much weaker despite rated as 12k in the same exact attic room. I replaced it with another U instead and very happy with it. I would not recommend this . $500 is not the real normal price.. it's routinely sold for $420
