I don't have the RG556 or RG Slide; but I do own the RG406H (same chipset as both). That handheld has been able to handle pretty much every N64, Dreamcast and PSP game I've thrown at it, with rare exception.

For GameCube - using the latest version of Dolphin emulator from the Google Play Store - a good 75% of what I've tried has been solid. With PS2, roughly 70% using NetherSX2 v2.2n Net Dev Build from GitHub [github.com] (there may be an even newer NetherSX2 release out, not sure though).
I haven't tried myself, but people have gotten some Wii and 3DS games working on these Unisoc T820 devices; however - temper your expectations with those systems. Think of any games you can get working from those systems as a bonus.

Of course, there's also GameNative (lightweight PC games you own on Steam, GOG, Epic Games, and Amazon Prime Gaming), game streaming (Xbox Game Pass / GeForce Now - better w/ the 16:9 screen on the RG556 vs. the 4:3 screen on the RG406H), and compatible Android games from the Google Play Store.

There are also a few RG556's in blue for $112.59 after code 18USDEALSS from Anbernic Stateside Store [aliexpress.us] (U.S.-based shipping), if anyone is interested.

If you're technically inclined, research flashing Gamma OS custom firmware to help with alleviating the cardinal snapping (joysticks) when using the stock Anbernic operating system. Guide: https://youtu.be/dosZwILXmvs?si=aEAhconeiQMRbND8

FYI, the RG Rotate is also about $80 after coupons. Ships on the slow boat from China though...ordered that one. I considered the Slide too as it is super cool but realistically do not have a niche to justify in my use case.

P.S. Thanks RevOne Wink

I bought this last time. I like it well enough, but the included emulators are pretty out of date. I think my retroarch was like 1.20.xx. I don't remember exactly, but it was the version just before they included black frame insertion which I want since the Slide has a 120hz screen. I also enjoy 4:3 content like old shows and cartoons on this device. The speakers aren't great, but at least they are forward facing unlike the RG Rotate. I also appreciate the headphone jack.

edit; also wanted to mention the thickness. It's not too bad, but it's about as thick as a VHS tape.

Install GammaOS. It works great on it. BFI is a toggle in the android quick settings with the OS. Plus there's a performance bump vs stock android.

So, which brand of games does this take? Only Android store? Digital Nintendos? I don't see a CD or cartridge slot mentioned, just a slide out paddle.

It's an android handheld intended to run emulators. There is a lot to explain here if you aren't familiar with these, but effectively you can download ROMs (full copies of games) from various sources for just about any platform in existence, and there is an emulator for basically every system ever released. These aren't officially supported by Sega, Nintendo, Sony or any of the other original device makers. Nintendo is openly hostile towards emulation. You're going to need to follow online guides like YouTube videos to get these working, as it's not as simple as a CD or cartridge.

This all takes a bit of tinkering to perfect, and Anbernic usually provides some emulators out of the box, (and Rom sets depending on the handheld, and they will state how many) but ultimately this handheld is capable of emulating anything up to Dreamcast very well. PS2 and Gamecube will be playable here depending on the game and the tweaks, but around 1/4 of those libraries will either be unplayable, play below native framerates, or require individual tweaks to get working.

The next step up in processing power would be chipsets liek the Dimensity 8300 in the Anbernic RG477m / 477v, or the Snapdragon 865 in the Retroid Pocket 5. Those handhelds can play nearly 100% of PS2 and Gamecube releases, but they are usually $200 handhelds.

To add to what RevOne stated, 3DS runs great as well. You just have a single screen so the best use case are games which do not need both screens at the same time. Which isn't a lot really, most games only use the lower display for maps, inventory, etc so flipping screens to glance at those tends to be second nature anyway since any other system would not have dual screens to begin with. Games like Contra 4, which need both screens at the same time would be (IMO) less than playable though.
