This a pretty good deal. One third the price of similar ones on Amazon.

Always wondered why someone would need on/off switches for a usb hub connected to a pc.

Just another fail safe to turn off a hdd for when you want to format another hdd so you don't accidentally format the wrong drive?

You and me both. I think you're right. Adds a layer of protection from formatting issues or electric surges. Plus vampire power draw

Thanks OP. Whether due to an old system or a recent power outage, the PCI bus on my computer seems to be toast. Needed to replace the USB cards so this is perfect timing

I actually use the switches. Sometimes you some usb devices that are finicky and need to be power cycled quickly (like vr receivers). Or maybe you have something like a USB powered light.

This hub isn't powered so the draw could exceed the output of the single port it's connected to.
I had this problem with a Raspberry Pi connected to several HDDs. It would crash the whole system if they all spun up, so I'd turn them off instead of unplugging them.

They have a powered version if that's a concern.

In that case it makes even more sense, since the attached peripherals won't turn off when the host is powered down.

That's interesting. I thought it would power down since there's no data being transmitted when the host is shut off. I guess not.

There's a tiny power barrel connector on these to do power injection. It's the same hub as the other, they just don't include the wall wart on this item.

For those asking why: powering off USB devices is great for putting your PC in sleep mode and ensuring USB peripherals don't light up at night and accidentally hitting the keyboard cannot wake the PC. My microphone has a bright red LED and my mouse and keyboard light up when in use.

Depends on the peripheral. Hard drives usually have a power down state like that. The docking station they're in might not. Mice, keyboards and fans might still draw power.

I use the on/off switches because Windows doesn't work right. If it isn't game controller enumeration, it is Bluetooth problems. I had been fighting with Windows inability to handle the simplest things since XP and decided that they are never going to fix the issues, they haven't. Player 1 and 2 controllers randomly swapping in Windows for no reason gets to be pretty old. And the software solutions are not compatible with everything I use. It is just easier to use push buttons to disconnect the player 2 controller until you load the software or easily swap controllers based on the type of game you are going to play. There is not a single Bluetooth adapter that works reliably with all devices that you may want to connect. And you can't use multiple Bluetooth adapters at the same time. But you can have drivers installed and physically disconnect or use a switch to remove one device from the system 10 seconds before you connect the other by pressing the adjacent switch. I found pushing buttons to just be easier than swapping dongles and cables.
