They have pre-filter screens in the side areas that bulge out. You'll have to pull them up and out once every couple months and give them a quick rinse in the sink to remove larger particles. I think they help the main filter last longer. It'll give you a red warning when the screens need cleaning.
My suggestion is to keep the units set to auto. They power up at intervals to keep the air clean and they'll sense when something is stinky, like when you cook, and will power up until the air is clear. I think this setting also helps lengthen the lifespan of the unit as they aren't running 24/7.
So far no filter replacements. I can't imagine they literally last forever, but I'm assuming never change means they last the life of the unit. So the motor may fail before the filter needs replacement.

Edit again: From a Google search, Woot offers a 90 day warranty on refurbished items. If the warranty is worth the extra $20, Ebay may be the way to go.
