The Edge Explore 2 is a navigation focused Garmin bike computer that pairs well with Varia and ANT plus sensors, while also handling basic ride stats and dynamic routing. It feels like a simpler Edge 1040, with a newer touch interface and a larger screen that works well for recreational riding and offloading navigation from a phone. The main tradeoffs are shorter battery life than MIP based models and fewer advanced training metrics, plus no dedicated mountain bike mode. It is also the least expensive Garmin bike computer in this range, though some cheaper alternatives exist.

Check out Magene Bike Computers. All the same featured for more than half the price as Garmin. I wouldn't buy a Garmin or Wahoo again.

If be all over a model like this if the geoid wasn't an option but after picking a geoid up for my power meter equipped commuter bike, I just can't justify $200+ for a computer anymore, despite some of the small quirks and lack of memory on the geoid.
I'm a casual cyclist who gets mad at Google updating my route mid-ride to roads I am not comfortable riding (like the several roads where bike lanes stop halfway between intersections).

How is the route setup process on the Geode? Any weird quirks? It says it supports automatic re-routing on the fly; is there any option to give roads a preference rating (i.e. mark a less-direct road as bike friendly to use that instead of a quicker, more heart-attack inducing road)?

Or is there an (android) app I could use and get the same benefit?

Could anyone recommend the cheapest display that they know works with varia? Notifications on phone don't come very reliably unless the app is open.

I was looking into this as well and from reading reviews, the cheap Chinese ones aren't reliable enough with the varia (for me) and this Explore 2 is currently the least expensive Garmin bike computer available so I'm just going with this.

whats the issue with app open during riding? battery? i assume you gave the background permissions to app.
i use ridewithgps but with app open (phone on handlebar). works beautifully.

edit: apparently the geoid works with varia. so i might give that a try.
the bigger 2.8" Geoid is only $10 more ($60)

Based on reviews on Amazon, most say it works, some said it didn't for them. So I passed on it because of this, and just got the Explore 2 since my multiple Garmin Edge devices always worked with my Varia.
Mine works with varia (CC600).

wondering if i get the geoid to use with varia, how will the headphones handle the varia alerts with music coming from another device (phone)?
I currently use my phone for music and varia where the varia alerts interrupt music as needed. works great.
if it still worked like that with geoid/phone combo, i would buy geoid

I ride with the phone in my pocket and just rely on sound notifications
