I almost built nearly this exact configuration for my daughter as I had a bunch of spare parts (6500XT, 16GB DDR4, SSD, etc.) sitting unused. Ended up getting a used micro PC as I doubt she will use it for more than homwork/casual gaming.
Equivalent build comes out to $664.87:

Obviously could be cheaper getting some components off of eBay/Alibaba. But this does come preassembled.
So SlickDeal in this environment where RAM and GPU prices are insane.

This is only appropriate for the most casual of gaming. The RX 6500 XT only has 4GB of VRAM which is completely insufficient for any modern gaming. Additionally, the ryzen 5 5500 will only allow the GPU to run at PCIe 3.0 speed. The GPU is capable of 4.0, but being reduced to 3.0 and the card only using 4X of the 16x PCIe lanes is going to further cripple the performance. I would also recommend finding something used on your local FB Marketplace. You can get a much better system for this kind of money.

People try to. But I don't see many of those systems actually selling. I didn't say it would be easy. It takes some persistence and patience and some negotiating skills. I mean, would you recommend the system posted for anyone who wants to game?

Even at $600 I'd stay away from this. The Ryzen 5 5500 CPU is much weaker than other 5000 series CPUs, as it doesn't share the same architecture as the 5600x, 5800x, etc. Given that the better AM4 CPUs are at EOL (but still quite viable today, to be fair), this leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that you can buy this CPU brand new at Microcenter for $70 should tell you something. It also limits you to PCI 3.0, which is really disappointing.

The RX 6500XT is similarly low spec and will really struggle with any modern games. It's fine if you're only playing older titles, indie games and maybe esports, but you'll be out of luck on any AAA titles coming out in the next few years. A youtube review showed this card playing Forza 6 at 1080p on medium settings and it was barely averaging 50fps with nearly 100% vram utilization.

If someone wanted to get a gaming PC and all they had was $600 and not a penny more, I'd suggest they look at the used market. Like others have said, the bookface placemarket can have decent deals from time to time (of course it's dependent upon on the market in your area). I just checked mine and someone is selling a PowerSpec prebuilt with an i5-14400f and an RTX 5060 for $650. I'm guessing the seller would accept $600, and that system is from a known system integrator (MicroCenter's house brand after all) with acceptable midrange components. Granted, there is always a risk with buying used but on the other hand you can stretch your dollars a lot further.

This PC is has components that were already slow and outclassed when they were released in 2022.

It really depends on your area. I see some good deals from time to time (I just posted about one), but yes - I see a lot of the same thing. I think some of these folks are trying to sell systems to people who don't know any better, and will often say things like "i7 processor" without mentioning the generation. Sure, it's an i7... but a fourth generation Haswell chip from 2013. They also say things like "starter gaming PC" when there is no such thing - it's just old/outdated.
