I think they have some requirement where it has to be on pre-paid before it can be whitelisted for postpaid service. I dont have Verizon, so can't confirm 100%.

I have the TCL phone. It's newer chipset, 8GB of RAM + MicroSD support and the great dispaly are making it the better device in my opinion. But it's large and heavy.

GSMArena says "Mediatek Dimensity 6100+". This is for the TCL phone but it looks like Alcatel is just the rebranded version of the same phone: https://www.gsmarena.com/tcl_50_x...-13173.php

I know many of Verizon's own-brand prepaid phones cannot be used as a Wi-Fi device without being activated, they try to block it. Not sure if that applies to this model, but, independently, I did get the boost mobile version of this and the NXTPAPER display is quite nice if you're looking for that kind of thing.

So buy it, activate, put it on the shelf, check back in a year and it will be unclocked?

No, Verizon requires 12 months of active (paid) use. You cannot buy 1 month, and just store it away & wait out the year.

That's what I'm wondering, I wanted to get a nxtpaper phone for reading... any idea if this will function freely for WiFi without ever activating on Verizon network?
