This open box GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS ELITE AX is attractive as a low cost DDR5 Z790 board with Wi Fi 6E, and the price drew interest as a backup or future upgrade part. The board itself has been solid in at least one open box purchase, and the serial based warranty setup may still leave coverage in place. The main cautions are open box motherboard risk, possible bent pins or other hidden defects, and the hassle of troubleshooting or replacing a board later. DDR5 tuning can also take work, with XMP stability varying by kit and speed.

Unless you truly need it, why not break with Windows entirely? A.I. has made Linux accessible... it is a game changer. I have switched to Debian 13 GNOME and couldn't be happier.
Can you play Windows games like Diablo 4, Hearthstone and Marvel Snap on Linux?

I normally don't make posts, but reading the comments took me here. You know what, this price is a deal for a motherboard. Open box does not mean it's a bad board. I've purchased many open box electronics and parts and rarely have I run into an issue. The only issue I see with this purchase is the price it's going to cost for the memory.
I bought a 2nd set of DDR5 trying to get XMP working on my current board back in January, so that's not a problem

You may need to very slightly increase the VCCSA/VDD2/VDDQ voltage if you haven't tried that already. Had to do that with a Gigabyte z790 running 2x32gb. Now it runs stable with XMP speeds.
Yeah thanks. I tried a bunch of different settings and it's just not stable at 6400Mhz it's mostly ok at 6000 so I stick with that most days
the set is CORSAIR - VENGEANCE RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6400MHz C32 UDIMM

You overblow this a lot, but if someone is new I wouldn't recommend it. Gigabyte/msi/asus etc go off serial. So something like this will more than likely have warranty anyway. For troubleshooting, you can run OCCT tests / windows memory diagnostic to rule out a ton of issues. #4 is not always the case for everyone as someone can be building a new pc with this.
I've rma a msi MB with bend cpu pin, MicroCenter denied the warranty saying the pin was bent but msi still fixed it or sent me a different one.

I'm not a gamer, so I couldn't say, but your use case might be an instance where "only Windows will do". I have read that there is a large and growing gaming community within the Linux ecosystem, but it's not something I've given a lot of time to researching.
Update: I just did a quick Google search and it appears that some if not all of the games you've mentioned can be played in a Linux OS environment. One bonus of using a Linux OS to play these games would be that the Linux OS itself is "leaner", less "resource hungry" than Windows, leaving more of the potential of your hardware for the games themselves. But again, none of this was in reach for most of us before A.I.; A.I. makes Linux easy to configure and use.

Conversely, I've had bad experiences with open box motherboard and gpu. The motherboard would fry peripherals plugged into a certain port, gpu would artifact after 10min. Great price though. Might be worth the risk?

Welp that didn't go well. Got the Motherboard today and it clearly has bent pins in the CPU tray. Started the return and repackaged the box for shipping.
Best Buy's idea of Open box Excellent is clearly not the same as mine. The box had labels on it dating way back to Dec of 2025, makes you wonder just how many times they have sold this clearly defective item.

I ordered twice but cancelled twice within 5mins for each. Total waste of time and bestbuy inventory management sucks!
