Yes, ONN has a newer os. Yes they are not as agressive at this point, but the same forces that Scamerzon bowed to will be at wallymarts door to demand they do something to end the use of ONN/GTV side loading apps.
If you want sideloading, you will either go china, or use a laptop/ Mini pc to emulate android os (bliss, Linage, MRTeam, pheonix os, ect.. or blue stacks, or android studio to emulate with in windows. to name a few options).
If you dont need to sideload most modern tv sets come with some sort of "Smart" os that would have most of the Major apps. The set apps will make the revenue not scamerzon.
You also might concider a Apple TV.
If there is not a negitive market place reaction, they will not respond to the masses. You dont have to put up with it. Sticks are just a firmware update away from stoping side loading so there is no reason to continue using them.

YouTube search "vsee boxes" for the pre loaded higher end boxes or "slingbox". Both are recently reviewed on youtube. You might find clones of those with different names from different stores. You kind have learn to recognise the footprint and chipsets within if you go down that rabit hole.
The specs are probably the most important. I would think, in 2026, the min should be a 8core proc at 2k, 4gig ram and at least 32, but preferably 128gb storage. AI is making it all more expensive. Yes fire, ONN, GTV are all subsudised a bit to get you locked in to their ecosystem. It wont be as cheap as this deal, but it is a way to get freedom.
I saw somewhere custom firmware availible some of the most common china boxes. I think it was the rockchip cpu, but might also be allwiner chips too.. Possibly some one here might have more experiance than I do could point us in the right direction.
There will be lots of folks looking to offer custom firmware that can be verified clean. That is where what I call "cina boxes" get the bad rap. It is the reason I am going minipc running a android os. It can always be a pc again, so I can justify spending a bit more on the device. If you go minipc, you might want to make sure it has blue tooth so you can sync your fire stick remote to it..
I put win11 on the nvme drive and the android os on a internal ssd. I just select what drive to boot. Heck any pc or laptop with hdmi cand run android-86 if you are interested in giving it a try..
