I'd been thinking about a higher-end Garmin. When I started comparing features, the Explore 2 started making a lot more sense for what I actually do. This deal is pretty great!

I came to the same conclusion and actually ordered on Amazon for $180. That's getting canceled.

I do love having my Garmin 550 on the trail. This would be a more casual user's sweet spot vs. the 500 or 1000 series. Good-sized touch screen and functionality at a fantastic price. While your phone might be as good or better at these functions, having a dedicated unit saves your phone battery and lets you put the phone in a pocket or pack instead of on the bars where things get damaged in a crash.

The loss of WiFi isn't huge, but it does add the need to use another device to interface and upload your data. The WiFi units can update themselves and upload your ride data upon connection. Nice, but not a necessity.

Would it be more better/efficient to pair my Garmin Varia RTL515 with an iPhone or this Explore 2 device?

The bike computer will display/alert the upcoming traffic.

Comes down to preference really. Both will display traffic traffic alerts. I use my phone whenever I want to listen to music in my rides.

I pair mine with this device and carry my iphone in my handlebar bag or if MTB'ing, in a waist pack. Battery in this Garmin lasts alot longer and don't want to leave my phone screen out in the hot sun for hours of riding. This device is as cheap as it gets for a Garmin computer so definitely better/efficient than a fancy phone.

This ^^^^. I have several Garmin Edge units including this one, and I'd much rather have one of them on the front of the bike than my expensive smartphone (which stays in my Camebak). And it works fine with the Varia.

Unless you really geek out and use a lot of the performance features of the more expensive Edge models, you may find the Explore 2 is all you need.

And if you're on the fence, check out DC Rainmaker's online review, he does a nice job of comparing this model to a much more expensive Edge 1040.

I paid more for this model as a refurb, and I think that was a good deal. $150 is pretty slick.

I've also come to realize that this is all the bike computer I need, but I do want to future proof myself by getting the one with the power mount, which this unfortunately is not. Good deal still.

I'm not sold on the power mount. My longest rides are in the 4-5 hour range. More than that, I've got an e-bike and can use USB power from it.

On the slightly less than 0.1% chance that I switch to a traditional bike and begin doing multi-day rides, I'll have to bring along a power bank. Then again, I'll probably want something different than this computer if I'm doing that. The price premium for the integrated power is quite shocking.

I will stick around with my old 530 as this Explore 2 has no support for Di2 sensors w/ hood button controls.
