I had this thing for a long time and I've gotta say, I am surprised it's rated that well. It's designed to clip onto the valve stem and stay there but it doesn't do so securely so it will just leak out air unless you hold pressure on it at the perfect angle. Maybe I got a dud but I do see a few people in the reviews also mentioning it. Drove me mad so I threw it away

You can use one hand to hold it and one to inflate or you can add on a locking air chuck for $15 for a premium brand (Jaco Lightning, Haltech) or $12 for 2 for unknown Amazon brand.

Reading the reviews, your experience is not uncommon. So I asked the Amazon AI chat box about it, and got this back, FWIW:
The sealing issue is real and well-documented:
  • Out of 461 reviews mentioning sealing, 70% are negative β€” meaning sealing is the product's most problematic aspect by far
  • Common complaints include the chuck not forming a tight seal on valve stems regardless of technique, and the locking hose not securing properly
  • Some customers report it's essentially unusable as-is due to constant air leaking
However, there's important context:
  • Many issues stem from technique β€” reviewers and AstroAI both recommend: (1) push the chuck firmly onto the stem, (2) rotate clockwise 180°–360Β° to stop leaking
  • Some customers who initially had leaks fixed it by applying hand pressure while inflating β€” awkward but workable
  • AstroAI actively sends replacement chucks to affected customers via Amazon Message β€” their support response is generally praised
The best long-term fix per customers:
  • Replace the stock chuck with an open-style LockNFlate chuck or Jacob-style chuck β€” multiple reviewers say this completely solves the problem
  • You already have Teflon tape from past purchases, which some customers used on the brass fittings with success
Bottom line: There's roughly a 70% chance you'll experience some degree of sealing frustration out of the box. That said, the gauge, accuracy, and display are well-regarded β€” the chuck is the weak link. Want me to find replacement chucks or a better-sealing alternative?
