I guess it depends on your budget and your nephew's needs, but I don't think many recent graduates would be thrilled with a B-grade refurb as a gift. After the 40% discount, you're looking at $551.40 before tax on that laptop. Look at other laptop deals on here and I think you'll find you can get something with similar specs brand new for around that price. It won't quite have Dell Latitude build quality, but unless your nephew is painfully practical, I doubt he'll mind.

Does your nephew need a thin and light laptop or a thicker but more powerful one?I just ordered a precision 5570 on the website for a little bit more but it has a much more powerful cpu than the latitude 5340

Look, those who are going into college may have special requirements for what machines they need for their programs of study. Windows/Mac, amount of ram, minimum processor speeds, OS requirements, specific software packages, etc. Buying them a used, beat up laptop is like buying them a used toaster. They might not even be able to use it.

Some schools (at least, a few used to do this back in the day) actually bought the laptop for incoming Freshmen...at a marked up cost, naturally. Everyone had exactly the same machine -- because they felt incoming students couldn't be trusted to buy something correctly. I really hope places don't still do this.

Genuinely, before buying someone a machine like this, ASK THEM what they need.

If you see the price crossed out and a "SALE" price below, the coupon would not work on those items.

I only buy refurbished business class laptops but I personally would never buy one blindly. At least on eBay you can see photos of the machine and the condition it's in and if it has the specs you need.

He had no idea what he wanted and isn't going to college right now. I studied electrical engineering and commuter science and I'm an evangelist for Slickdeals. I get everyone their laptops when they buy them.

I got the recent "Acer Ebay" Slickdeal that at least had some thumbs up. Also brand new.

Anyone have any opinions on Acers? I've always known they existed but I don't think I've ever heard one opinion...

I bought lenovos and then went back to dell after they were sold to a Chinese company and then shipped me my very first "brick". Never had a problem with a dell before!

I'd say you did well. I think that's a much better deal. Far better in every spec than the one you were looking at, except for the lack of upgradeable RAM. And it's NEW! For the same price.

I've had two acer laptops and they've been fantastic. The general opinion of them seems to slant negative but as with any maker, YMMV.
