Ugh! This one uses soldered memory. But, according to Google, the Matrix M1 with the Intel chips and the AMD Ryzen 6800H has 2 memory slots. Looks like AceMagician is jumping on the soldered bandwagon.

Honest question: does that matter for most of us? I mean, I have zero issues on my just-obsoleted rig (thanks, W11) with an i7-920, 1070 ti, and 12 GB of DDR3. I'm able to play games like Crysis 2, FO4, Civ 6, on max settings, if that matters, though Civ games get really slow with big worlds late in game, but that's more of a processor bottle neck, I assume.

For every day productivity it's still 100% fine with no hiccups or slow downs that I've been aware of. It's just old and won't run W11, which is why I'd like something like this for everyday tasks and my old rig for gaming. Heck, I've been told that the APU in this mini PC can handle some light gaming, which would be nice.

Most of us are not using a CPU from '08 that is now on par with a $30-50 tablet. The CPU in this mini PC is roughly 6 times as fast. Your i7-920 system will run Windows 11 just fine, you just need to tear out the artificial TPM requirements. Either use Rufus to create the USB install for 11, or fully customize with schneegans. This mini PC has 680M graphics, roughly a third a 1070 Ti normally. This is a poor brand regardless, and the unit is overpriced at $436. Avoid ACEMAGICIAN and Kamrui, opt for Minisforum, GMKtec, or a laptop from a typical OEM. You're paying a lot extra here for the 24GB and 1TB. 7735HS units with 16GB and 512GB are sub $400 (I've seen as low as $250) for a reputable brand.

My 920 takes issue with your $30tablet blaspheming! Lol Our new Fire tab can't run games like this can!

Thanks for the advice, though, I appreciate it. I plan to wait until the holidays to buy something anyway. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the options now, if I end up having to buy something.

I've got Lenovo Gaming 3 with a 3050 ti and fifth? Gen ryzen 5, as well as 16GB of DDR4 as my "modern" machine. I got it for cheap, new, from Best Buy when they tried to sell me a scratched up floor model as an open box "excellent". With the exception of the mediocre screen, the laptop has been great. Plays Frost Punk great lol

As far as TPM, I don't think that's the only issue with such an old PC, right? I looked it up a couple of years ago and could not figure it out. Before I spend money on a cheap DD PC I'll try one more time to figure it out. I'd love to give my Dell XPS another few years of main-use life

  • Soldered RAM seems to lead to cheaper mini pcs.
  • Soldered RAM is uses less power = Less heat.
  • Soldered RAM can be much faster than sodimm ram. This RAM is 5500 MT/s.
  • 24gb is plenty for most anything. You'll be limited by the iGPU, before you are limited by RAM... Especially without an eGPU port.
This is a great COMPLETE home/office/emulation/cloud-gaming/etc... system. Especially in these trying times.

I build new and retro rigs, now nearly 40 years, and have a large collection from the first PCs up until modern. I sold the 920, though sold more of the 870, for first gen i series. Your 1070 Ti is a decade newer, so quite the upgrade for a Bloomfield. I test 11 on everything, the cut off is artificial beyond Pentium 4 (I have a P4 running Windows 10). Set up a usb drive with Rufus, download the Windows 11 iso, try watching a video or two on schneegans. I do every install offline, local account, no apps, disable checks for TPM, etc. Some OEM boxes just won't do it, due to picky BIOSes, but most will. Some require older versions of 11 like 23H2.

Beyond that, research mini PC manufacturers, they're not OEMs, many issues, particularly this one, which is why they're always showing up here, incentivized, promoted, "discounted", but definitely not deals.

You completely miss the entire point of SD.net. It is about value or best bang for the buck. Saying... well... oh... this is good enough kind of never addresses "the point".
Regarding 24GB of RAM... I personally have 32GB but 24GB should be enough for most people but who wants enough?
So, do you think this is the best deal around? Me Personally... you are so damn close to a 780m... like the very next CPU up in AMD such as the 7840HS or the 8745HS both of those have a 780m. And while that CPU at this price with these specs, it is always with 16GB of RAM that is upgradeable.

It seems when I search those CPU's on Ebay something comes up.

A good example would be those cheap ($200? $300?) Gateway laptops that Walmart sold several years ago for their holiday sales. They were great until several months later when the memory became faulty. Since you cant simply buy a new stick of ram and swap it out, you're either stuck with the constant crashes, throw it away (or recycle it), or find an electrician that knows what they're doing and have the memory replaced. That is if your PC will even boot up and not give the bad memory beep code when you turn on your PC. The last route would be dumb since that repair and new chips would cost about the same as the laptop cost new. Or be hopeful that you can find the board on eBay for cheap and hope that the board isnt having the same problem as you're having. Reddit (and other forums) are full of people with gripes on their soldered memory becoming faulty. The whole same reason HP, IBM (not Lenovo yet), and Packard Bell stopped doing that back in the late 90's and after Y2K. Once that reputation started, it hurt their sales. Then they quit and 20 - 25 years later, we're trying it again. Even the semi-pro dorks at the tech magazines are saying to stay away from soldered memory thing again. It's like history keeps repeating itself. https://www.pcworld.com/article/3...d-ram.html

Note: Link is just am example and I didnt fully read it. It just seems a lot of the magazines and e-zines have been having a lot of articles this year on keeping away from soldered ram for multiple reasons. Deja Vu! I wonder if they're going to try the soldered CPU craziness again. Getting the fans back on those 486/Pentium soldered CPUs were a joke.

If I put SteamOS on this, how would it compare to an actual steam machine ?

Steam machine has a lot better GPU but of course its near 3x the price. Just put in "Ryzen 7 7735HS gaming tests" or something similiar into youtube to see how this one performs. When I had my 5600g which is weaker graphics than this igpu, I would play games like bloodstained and it worked fine. Depends what you play.

Cool story! Now go read how the 360 Slim and E models are plagued with their 4GB memory modules going kaput. Also how the #1 cause of the Red Ring of Death (RROD) or Error Code 0101 is caused by cracked solder joints on the memory chips. Bringing up the X360 as an example was a bad idea. It's 2026 and you still havent heard of all the RAM problems over how many years now?

Its 2026 and my 20 year old console works perfectly fine. And literally every single console in history has soldered ram and perhaps you should check ebay to see how many 20-40 year old consoles are still working. All with soldered RAM. For something that is "plauged" i can find thousands of working examples. Maybe the use of "plagued" was a bad idea.
