FYI, This doesn't come with 14-50 pigtail, even though the picture shows it and the review on State of Charge YouTube channel features it.

You can look at my series of comment edits the last time this was posted. I confirmed with the seller and support that it's shipped with only hardwire.

Edit: A few people reported that it did come with a pigtail. So, my comment is now moot.

It's a fair point, but if you're going to spend the money to install an EV charger, you shouldn't base it on just what your current EV can do, but what your next one might need. My current PHEV maxes out at 32 amps, but it's marginally more expensive to get a 48 amp charger with same install costs and be ready for whatever I get next.

If you already have a 240v outlet and it's just a plug in installation, that's one thing, but if you're getting it hardwired the electrician probably isn't going to spring for higher gauge wiring/higher amp braker to future proof for a more capable install in the future unless you specifically request it. Plug in 240v are also limited to 40 amps, so you're leaving capability on the table if you use a plug vs. hardwire.

The picture shows the 14-50 cable and further down there is a video on how to swap the cable as well as set the DIP switches to limit current since when not hardwired you're going to have to limit to 40A (80% continuous of the 50A breaker). Overall, pretty good price for a well regarded brand.

Anyone use this for their Tesla? Any reason to get this over a used Tesla wall charger?

Consider getting a permit for insurance reasons. If it causes a fire, insurance claims will search for a permit on record. No permit could jeopardize insurance coverage.

I posed this to ChatGPT: Compare this EV charging system, WOLFBOX Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp J1772,Hardwired EV Charger Level 2 with NEMA 14-50 Plug 25ft Cable,Smart APP&RFID Card Control,240V Electric Vehicle Charging Station (WE48), versus the Tesla brand charging system for home residences. What is the difference in capability, ease of installation, performance, reviews, cost, etc.?

Part of reply:
For your Model Y Juniper

The biggest advantage of the Tesla charger isn't charging speed (both can charge at 48A). It's the convenience:

Feature ............... Tesla Universal Wall Connector.......... WOLFBOX WE48
Uses Tesla app......................................Yes............................. .... No
Separate charger app required .......... No ..................... ................. Yes
Native Tesla plug ........................... Yes ................................... No (adapter needed)
Firmware updates .................. Tesla app ........................... WOLFBOX app
Charge data in Tesla ecosystem ......... Yes .......................... Limited
Multi-charger power sharing ......... Yes .......................... Limited/unclear

For a Tesla owner, especially if you expect to keep the car several years, the Tesla charger's integration is one of its strongest selling points. Many owners feel that advantage alone is worth the roughly $100–150 higher purchase price. You essentially get an appliance that feels like part of the car rather than a third-party accessory.

Since I have a Tesla, I'm sticking with getting a Tesla brand EV charger even though it cost a little more because of the app is integrated. Relative has the Tesla EV Charger and praises the seamless integration.

The Tesla Universal EV Charger comes with both EV charger format plugs. They are integrated to both rest in the cradle and easily use either format plug just by pushing a release button to leave the J1772 plug in the cradle position as you remove the handle which then only has the Tesla format plug. Then you just put the handle back in the cradle with the Tesla format plug easily seated in the back of the J1772 plug. If you want to use the J1772 format plug, you just remove the handle without pushing the release button that disconnects the two format plugs from each other. Excellent user ergonomic and convenient design.

The Wolfbox will need the Tesla format plug adaptor. Will the Wolfbox cradle accept the Tesla format plug adaptor when you go to put the handle back in the cradle or will you need to remove it to put the handle back in the cradle? If it does not allow the Tesla format plug to rest in the cradle while attached to the handle, then that means you will be removing the handle from the Wolfbox to use it and then manually attaching the Tesla format plug adaptor every time, then disconnecting the adapter every time to put the handle back in the cradle. Not a big deal. But not as convenient.

Does anyone know if a extension can be purchased for this? I need about 50' instead of 25.

You should absolutely not double the length of the cable. There are some shady companies out there that sell extensions for these things, but you'll find that exactly 0 of them are UL listed, because it's not safe to extend high voltage cables beyond their design limitations. Also, I'm pretty sure the NEC limits charging cables to 25ft. These are continuous load devices and they're designed to limit heat at their factory spec. Doubling the length of the cable changes that drastically and you'd be asking for a fire. Worse, your insurance won't cover any fire damage because you essentially modified the charger with an unapproved accessory

Important to remember that most people don't need 48 amp 230V charging. I own a Chevy Bolt EUV and I charge my car on a 230V 24 amp charger (it can do 32 amps, but I keep it slower on purpose).
My 22 Chevy Bolt will use all 48 amps. We use it daily on a 75 mile commute.

My point was not that a car could use it. I'm saying the charge times, when you're talking about overnight charging, don't matter if it's 4 hours or 6 hours, because it's charging while you sleep anyway.

It's kind of amazing how many EV owners don't get this. 98% of drivers would be covered by a 20A 240 charger.

Seems like a solid price. Just make sure your panel and wiring can support 48A charging before buying. For many EV owners, the difference between 40A and 48A won't matter much since the car is charging overnight anyway.

Thank you!

What smart features does it have? If you buy 2 of them can it figure out how to schedule charge both of them so that 2 cars are charged by the morning?

First part of ur post I absolutley agree with. Dont do it! But please cite ur source on "insurance not covering any fire damage". There are countless fires caused by extension cord use in homes and insurance covers them, so why are you so positive they will not in this case? I see these unsubstantiated claims all the time
