Correct - most dive lights do not, as that would make them susceptible to water intrusion. It does, however, come with an external battery charger.

I read some dive lights need to be in the water to stay cool and not overheat. Is that the case with these?

Some of the high-powered lights with multiple emitters and battery packs do need to be in the water to keep the temp down, yes. This one does not. I have a few. My wife uses one to walk the dog because "all your other lights have too many bells and whistles".

Most dive lights have super simple settings (Off / Low / Med / High), because when you're 60 feet down in darkness you don't want to be messing around with 18 modes.

Be careful. The Andruil supporters will lambast you....how DARE you not want to use a double-sided 8.5x11 flowchart to find out how to turn the flashlight on? As I've been told "if it bothers you so much, go to radio shack and buy one of their simpleton flashlights!"
