2.5 G is worth having over 1G imo

It's diminishing returns and unnecessary for most people, but having the words 2.5 multi-gigabit ethernet switch in the title instead of just the exact model number might have gotten this more interest. If you do need one (or want one), it seems like a good deal. It's metal. Has LEDs to show connection speed status. It's only a bit more than the odd brands you've never heard of. You don't even need to be a prime member for this deal (seems to be $20 cheaper than ever).

Many higher end home routers have built-in VLAN functionality. If so, you would connect the systems whose network traffic you want to separate directly to the router ethernet ports and configure the network segments through the router menu. No need for an additional switch. Most home routers with VLAN functionality have a wizard to assign specific ethernet ports on the router to the VLAN.
Thanks, and yes I agree, probably overkill for what I need in the home. As long as I can keep my IoT online and separate I'm satisfied! Since getting the Eeros, I'm seeing 2G to my PC, the Deco limited traffic to 1G. I run a NAS for video/photo/music and household docs with an on-prem sync, plus an cloud backup, all of these are liking the new setup!

Your Deco probably limited traffic to 1G because it's using a 1G port. If you upgraded your Deco to one with more 2.5G ports or faster, you probably won't be limited to 1G.

1g switch is $12https://www.newegg.com/tp-link-tl...6833704179why are 2.5g so pricey?
1g consumer networking gear has been common place for like over 2 decades, where 2.5g and faster was typically commercial gear and only became available for home in the last 10 years or so. Mass production brings prices down.

you still need to have a downstream seperate switch going to those seperate VLAN ports, you want the segmentation to happen on the switch and trunk up to the router, but best option is L3 switch and routing to happen on the switch. I do agree most people dont really need this in a home network, as most people dont know what is happening on ethernet/TCP/IP network anyway...

Check this out for $52, only 4x2.5G, but also 2xSFP+ and POE+https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F5WGFFWS
I bought one of these boxes (it had a different name but same box) and it was a nightmare... The Poe wasn't negotiating the correct voltages and causing my access points to become unstable

Managed switches are designed with additional features that are geared for office/business environments where functionality like VLAN segmentation or port mirroring is common. Most home networks don't have a need for the additional features, which is why most consumers switches are unmanaged for simplicity. One feature this switch lacks is a SFP+ port, common with fiber gateway's.
Also some of these unmanaged switches have functionality built in that you might want to turn off, but you can't. Like STP or Flow control etc...

Great deal. Coming down fast. Paid $70 in Nov 2025 and I think that was a sale price.

Took long enough for 2.5Gbit to get affordable for home use.

I concur with the general sentiment here. This is slick for 8 ports of 2.5GB. Within the last year or two, I paid a lot more than that for a no name brand.

A lot of ISPs are offering multi gig internet. Don't let your router or switches be a bottleneck.

Says 10% back if you pay with Amazon Prime card on the product page but the order page shows the regular 5%. Keeping my fingers crossed 😁

I have 2.5gbps fiber so this is perfect. Finally price is coming down.
Now waiting for deal on 2.5 + POE combo. Smilie asking too much, I know. It's 120 right now not bad.
I only have 1 Gig internet, but this is perfect for my homelab. btw, most people do not have to upgrade their ethernet to get 2.5 Gig speed. Cat 6 cable is running fine with this speed.

Yeah, depending on cable quality and length, even cat5e can do 10 Gbps (or 5 Gbps if it's longer and almost always 2.5 Gbps unless it's very very long). This guy did all kinds of tests on different cat5e lengths; results toward end of video: https://youtu.be/zACK7Aka4Us?t=618
In a different video, he gets 10 Gbps out of a short cat5 (not 5e) cable.

2.5 is a game changer..I never had 1 but I changed my setup a bit and 2.5 makes it all the more usable.
