Managed switches are designed with additional features that are geared for office/business environments where functionality like VLAN segmentation or port mirroring is common. Most home networks don't have a need for the additional features, which is why most consumers switches are unmanaged for simplicity. One feature this switch lacks is a SFP+ port, common with fiber gateway's.

Obviously you're incorrect, as some home users such as myself benefit from being able to transfer large data sets between workstation and server. Try to realize that not everyone conforms to your scenarios and has your needs. It's a big world out there.

Thanks, and yes I agree, probably overkill for what I need in the home. As long as I can keep my IoT online and separate I'm satisfied! Since getting the Eeros, I'm seeing 2G to my PC, the Deco limited traffic to 1G. I run a NAS for video/photo/music and household docs with an on-prem sync, plus an cloud backup, all of these are liking the new setup!

Your Deco probably limited traffic to 1G because it's using a 1G port. If you upgraded your Deco to one with more 2.5G ports or faster, you probably won't be limited to 1G.

1g consumer networking gear has been common place for like over 2 decades, where 2.5g and faster was typically commercial gear and only became available for home in the last 10 years or so. Mass production brings prices down.

you still need to have a downstream seperate switch going to those seperate VLAN ports, you want the segmentation to happen on the switch and trunk up to the router, but best option is L3 switch and routing to happen on the switch. I do agree most people dont really need this in a home network, as most people dont know what is happening on ethernet/TCP/IP network anyway...

Also some of these unmanaged switches have functionality built in that you might want to turn off, but you can't. Like STP or Flow control etc...

I concur with the general sentiment here. This is slick for 8 ports of 2.5GB. Within the last year or two, I paid a lot more than that for a no name brand.

A lot of ISPs are offering multi gig internet. Don't let your router or switches be a bottleneck.

Yeah, depending on cable quality and length, even cat5e can do 10 Gbps (or 5 Gbps if it's longer and almost always 2.5 Gbps unless it's very very long). This guy did all kinds of tests on different cat5e lengths; results toward end of video: https://youtu.be/zACK7Aka4Us?t=618
In a different video, he gets 10 Gbps out of a short cat5 (not 5e) cable.
