If you want high speed vpn, go with the 7. Otherwise, ax is sufficient.

This one has a much stronger processor, so it depends on what you'll have running on the router itself. For example, encrypting a VPN tunnel: AX is rated for 300mbps Wireguard vs 1100 here, but your internet connection will usually be a bottleneck first. If you're not planning to push your router, AX vs 7 will be almost indistinguishable.

I use my AX for VPN with open Xfinity WiFi hotspots, so plenty fast enough
