No core is required. You can sell your old battery at a scrap yard or possibly donate it to a local Walmart or auto parts store for recycling.

Doublecheck that your VW doesn't need a battery with a serial number that can be input into the car's computer to control the charging.
I was working on a Golf from that era that more-or-less required a VW battery, but the dealership battery was only $20 more than one from autozone.
