Terro has worked great for me generally, but I had an infestation once where they ignored Terro traps for weeks, but then suddenly decided they really wanted it. In the meantime, I made DIY traps with variations of peanut butter and fermented fruit that worked.
Also had ants that seemed to be dying off too quickly from Terro, so I had to make a weaker solution so they'd survive a trip back to the colony.
Advion gets a lot of praise for effectiveness, but I'm willing to struggle a bit with borax-based traps because it's the least toxic out of all of them. The $3 box of borax I got is essentially a lifetime supply of DIY trap-making, but I always start with Terro for the convenience.

Terro works for indoors but takes weeks to fully work and in the meantime you get a lot of dead ants laying around the house every day. Advion I haven't tested enough - my initial findings are that ants go for it initially but stop after a while before the colony dies.
The one that is surprisingly effective that I tried for the first time this year is Spectracide Bug Stop Home Barrier. I say surprisingly because it's cheap and you get of whole lot of it (I bought a gallon for $5 on sale, maybe Home Depot) but only need to use a little. I sprayed the outside home perimeter and around the windows but also the trouble spots on the inside (in my case, they come in behind the electrical outlet plates in the kitchen and also show up inside at the back door). Unlike Terro and Advion, this kills immediately and repels immediately. In my case, I first started using it in early/mid May and needed at least 1 more interior treatment since and a few extra times outdoors in the hot spots (around the back door where they then make their way to the kitchen). I don't know how pet friendly this stuff is - research it yourself if that's a concern.
I've also tried Triazicide granules but haven't found them effective (perhaps if I use them prior to spring that would help?).
Diatomaceous Earth does work too for areas that they crawl over or by dumping some over any ant hills. But so far my favorite is easily that Spectracide barrier spray.
