Community Reviews
The refurbished Galaxy S23 Ultra stands out for its flagship hardware, especially the 512GB model with 12GB of RAM, the built in Bluetooth S Pen, and a camera system that still gets praise for sharp shots and exceptional 10x zoom. The phone is also described as feeling like new in hand, with strong overall performance and a U.S. unlocked version that uses one physical nano SIM plus eSIM. The main cautions are shorter remaining software support, possible battery wear, and refurb quality that can vary, including reports of non OEM parts or mismatched screens. A strong feature set, but the remaining support window and refurb condition deserve a close look.
Mobile photographers who shoot distant subjects, because the 10x zoom is strong and the camera is still hard to beat at long range.
Power users who want extra multitasking headroom, because the 512GB model includes 12GB RAM instead of 8GB on the smaller storage version.
People who want a stylus-equipped phone, because it includes a Bluetooth S-Pen.
Owners who need a rugged backup phone, because factory-refurb units with a new battery can keep working through dirt and heat.
Shoppers who need dependable refurb quality, because refurb phones can arrive with old batteries, unknown damage, or non-OEM replacement parts.
People who need long software support, because OS and security updates are expected to end soon.
Heavy all-day phone users, because the battery can drop to barely half a day.
Photographers who rely on the 3x-to-9.9x zoom range, because that range can look blurry and effectively unusable.

Does anyone happen to know whether the phone got physical SIM card slot. If so single or dual?
Camera on the S23 Ultra is good though, comparable to the iPhone 14 Pro but way more Zoom.
The 10MP 10x camera is great. But the phone's camera system is crippled by the 10MP 3x camera. On paper this doesn't seem that bad, but in practice it's horrendous. Because the next optical zoom step is 10x, that means the 3x camera has to cover the entire range from 3x to 9.9x.
At 3x it's 10MP.
At 6x it's effectively 2.5 MP.
At 9x it's effectively 1.1 MP.
Basically I consider it unusable in the 5x-9.9x range. Pictures I take in that range look OK on the screen, but are a blurry mess on a monitor. (The 1x shooter is 200MP so can easily handle the 1x-2.9x range. In fact it's nearly as sharp at 3x as the 3x, and I found it to be superior to the 3x @ 3x macro shots. I've got a bunch of macro photos shot at 2.9x to force the phone to use the 1x lens.)
They changed the high-end telephoto from 10MP 10x on the S23 Ultra, to 50MP 5x on the S24 Ultra. That's 50MP at 5x, and effectively 12.5 MP at 10x. It loses a bit in exposure speed at 10x (sensor pixels are slightly smaller, so pictures in low light at 10x look a bit worse than on the S23 Ultra). But in daylight it's difficult to tell the two apart at 10x.
And more importantly, this means the pitiful 3x camera only needs to cover the 3x-4.9x zoom range. At 4.9x it's effectively 3.7x MP. Not great, but nowhere near as bad as at 6x-9.9x. This is the main reason I'm planning to upgrade to the S24 Ultra - because right now my effective shooting zooms are 0.6x - 4x, and 10x-15x. No photos allowed in the 5x-9.9x range.
Amazon is offering me $290 for my S23 Ultra (it's a 512 GB model - Samsung does not give you extra money for trading in a higher memory model, but Amazon does). So I'll probably sell it there.
Why don't I get the S25/S26 Ultra or wait for the S27 Ultra? The S26U's cameras are nearly the same as the S24U, just slightly wider apertures and a higher-res wide-angle. I really like having bluetooth on the pen (S24U was the last model to have that). And I dislike the rounded corners and straight edge styling they started with the S25U.
I'm hearing some promising rumors for the S27U's camera lineup (dropping the 3x camera, putting in a larger 1x sensor able to cover the 1x-4.9x range). But with trade-ins being nerfed and the ridiculous memory upgrade prices ($500 for an extra 768 GB of NAND? Seriously?), I don't see myself buying a S27U.
People have figured out that the S24 Ultra is the last "great" Ultra Samsung phone. So it's impossible to find refurbs for it at Samsung, and its used/refurb prices are inflated elsewhere. So you'll have to decide for yourself if the cost is worth it.
