Just get a Tesla with sentry mode. These things suuck! You can't view any clips from your phone unless you download them from the app, you car has to be powered down as the viofo wifi Bluetooth interferes with the car, these are a huge hassle
but then we would have to own a Tesla

Is the hardwiring generic so if the future if you get another dashcam you can just plug it into the existing wiring or does all need to be rewired?

Not generic:

If I had another type C dash cam to plug in I'd try it, but that list doesn't mean that other brand dash cams with the same power connection won't turn on. It's that different hardwire kits might be necessary for different Viofo models. If you have a camera with type C it should at least power on the front camera.

The question I was replying to was "is existing (hard)wiring generic?", and my qualified reference to back up my "Is not generic" claim was showing 5 separate wiring kits (for viofo alone)- which can have (active) components for more than just voltage conversion, and beyond the physical USB-C connector and some focusing on just its power pinouts.

"Existing wiring" may even extend to the hope that if the rear camera cable physically fits the new cam (or even slap on a "generic" USB adapter), that any future glitches and intermittency - due to current / bandwidth limitations or impedance mismatch- is the green light to jump on forums and bash the product as a failure.

One caveat to "it might just work cuz all USB-C defaults to 5V not 20v and are created equal" is: will the product's disclosure of detailed specs be sufficient? As sufficient as your quantified measurements of, say, at least the peak current requirements are met (with some extra margin) by the legacy "generic" cable?

If Yoda was tech, it would be, "Know. Or know not. There is no try. There is only fry."
