Are these the "you get what you pay for" type of shoes?

The black and tan ones are rock solid, very comfortable and wide, not too heavy as well. They'll probably last a good 6 months to a year with daily use.

Wide as in suitable for true wide feet (EE+) or wide as in, not narrow as other athletic shoes?

I went into a specialized runners store many many years ago and got some asics that were like 100 bucks and even got my feet sized there. However now that I'm actually using them to walk one of them tore up my left ankle with horrible rubbing. So rather than buy another hundred dollar pair of shoes would these be fine for daily walking? Anyone have any issues with ankle rubbing?

Well those shoes are specifically for running. They will fark your feet up if you walk in them. I actually have the black and tan ones which I use for lifting and walking the dog and they are pretty comfy. I'm actually gonna get a white pair as well
