For the first time in my life, I've seen Apple TV snapped up just like toilet paper and bottled water. People are frantically buying things they don't actually need, driven solely by fear of the future.
I've been realizing how many times in the last few years we've had to manage scarcity situations and the related price/availability effects. Covid, clorox wipes, toilet paper, etc. Tariffs, sudden price increases on anything from overseas (and how much we get used to cheap consumer items from China). Last fall, PC blu ray drives stop being made and everything going expensive and hard to get. Later last fall, memory prices, then ssd prices, then hard drive prices and availability. This year, Iran war, gasoline and anything made from petroleum. This week, sure, apple tv, more continuation of the same.

Costco and Best Buy no longer have inventory left. Target [target.com], Walmart [walmart.com], BJs [bjs.com], and Sams are the only ones with stock.

Edit:
Sold out at Sams(for shipping), too.
Target is out of stock now. BJs only has the 64GB version. Walmart still $150 with 8 remaining.

67% increase in price is ridiculous.

Is there anything that's the same cost as it was pre-2026, let alone pre-COVID?

Only to be replaced in Sept when the new one's announced?
The new one isn't going to be less than $250 and the current one is damn good.

I fomo purchased from Target
I did the same thing. I want 3rd gen because it has better integration with Homepods and has Ethernet. I have 2nd Gen 4K. Only one was available in my are for pickup. It will be interesting to see if it will go through. It seems all pricing went up immediately at all other retailer's. In fact I saw Apple refurbed had it for $139 - but when you click on link it's now $200. That's just greed. If the product retailed at $149 - and then you get it back for a refurb and then turn around and sell back for $200 - just greedy. And I', an Apple fan.

Just an off topic. There are these noodles for sale at Amazon - Prime Day Deal!!!! I had bought them before in 2025. The price in 2026 (on sale) is $18 for 30. I had bought them for $11!!!! Guess what - a 64% increase.

Yeah I FOMO and bought two at Walmart for delivery. I also placed QNTY 1 for Target for pickup. I have wanted this version for a long time. I suspect the newer version will be better of course - but probably way more expensive. This version pairs with Homepods better giving better audio quality. I have second gen 4K and it's fine. If I get these shipped and processed - maybe turn one around for slight profit.

I agree. It' will be interesting to see what they come out the door on new version - base 64 -> $250 and higher end maybe $300/$325. I can't see this going in the $400's! But maybe.

Exactly. The problem is the "craze" is only with data miners and manufacturers. We consumers could not care less and are being force fed with this garbage at a steep price -- not just the extra cost of chips but the strain on energy and accelerated loss of open land at a time when available housing is becoming an issue too.

Anyone use this for Plex?
Yeah works great. I also have Plex on my Firestick Max and the picture is clearly better on the ATV. I have both connected to the same TV so the streaming device is the only variable.

Download and pay lifetime $95 fee for Infuse Pro. OMG it's so worth it. The best apple tv media player, hands down. Plus you can avoid using Plex altogether if you setup your server with Tailscale! You can access your network locally from anywhere and stream via SMB!
I'm a Plex user and never heard of Infuse Pro. Curious what the advantages are versus Plex? I like to try new things so I may check it out.

Having to use Tailscale outside of the home network seems like a good reason not to go this route.

Ordered one through pickup at local Sam's Club, scheduled to pick up this afternoon. SHowed low stock, and after I ordered shows sold out. We'll see if they produce one. Wouldn't the the first time I ordered something only to be told they were out. ALSO ordered one at another Sam's further away... they SEEMED to have more stock. Did so primarily as a backstop now wondering if I should flip one if I get my hands on both of them.
