2) When you find a cheap one, run it by cruisecompete.com for quotes from travel agents. My $780 list price cruise turned into a $555 cruise! sometimes the price is the same, but you get some perks like on board credit.
3) Keep a tab open on flights.google.com; i like to price the cruise+airfare for each option, as sometimes the airfare is more than the cost of the cruise! You can also save a lot of money by coming a day or two early, or staying a day or two longer, as flight costs vary day to day. In my case it made sense to drive 6 hours and pay for parking rather than flying.
4) get Hilton Aspire credit card ($550/yr) for automatic hilton diamond status, status match to MSC Diamond (which you can keep for life by taking a cruise every 5 years.) You get 1 free specialty dining experience on every cruise, priority boarding, preference for upgraded cabins and some other nice perks. You can dump the Aspire after the first year and keep the 175,000 hilton points, worth around $700 and a free night certificate possibly worth $600 if you stay at top tier Hilton property. Also, there are a lot of hilton resorts around cruise ports so another card benefit ($200 resort credit in Jan-June, another $200 credit in July-Dec) can get you a free or reduced price stay if you arrive in port the night before. There is also a $200/yr airline benefit that can be easily harvested for United credit to help you fly there.
5) if you do want drinks and wi-fi the absolute cheapest time to get that is during booking. It's more to add it after booking and before the cruise, and even more when you do it on board. If you are happy with the included complementary drinks, you can get cheap or free internet (at least a little bit) through most Visa signature/infinite cards and gigsky.com. They'll give you 100MB of onboard internet for free to try it out. That might be all you need to check your email a couple of times if you're careful.
Just as an aside drinks+wifi can cost more than the cruise itself. Do your drink math before you buy a plan. drink juice, water, and coffee, unplug when you're not in port, and save yourself a lot of money! even a couple of ala cart drinks per day is a lot cheaper than the drink package.
